To be sure you have solved this problem, you need to be certain you have re-read the files that were producing I/O Error previously. If the pattern does not hold, the drive will attempt to substitute a spare from blocks it has in reserve for exactly this purpose. If the pattern holds and is readable, I/O errors will stop. The permanent solution to I/O error is to rewrite the Bad Block with new data. So your Directory is probably fine, but the data area could be fatally damaged and it would still pass. Disk Warrior will appear to hang as the drive re-reads the blocks, attempting to get correctible data.ĭisk Utility ( Repair Disk ) does not read a single block from the Data areas on the drive. It specifically means your drive has an unreadable and uncorrectable Bad Block, even after attempting to apply error correction in the drive and re-reading up to hundreds of times. I/O error is not some vague, amorphous error. My confidence in Drobo has been restored by finding this work-around - and I hope it is of use to for sharing your experience with this.ĭiskWarrior was locking up when I tried to do a file fix. Once I had done this, file access became reliable again and I was able to access stored files that I could not access using FireWire. The solution for me was to abandon FireWire and use the USB2 port on the Drobo. This was quite worrying! Disk Utility was finding no problems on the Volume, Drobo Dashboard was showing everything okay and DiskWarrior was locking up when I tried to do a file fix.
My problem was that when reading files from the Drobo, I would get an I/O error in the application or Finder Error -36 when attempting to copy the file from the Drobo. They are connected to an Early 2009 MacPro running OS X 10.9.4 (13E28) They have the latest firmware which is 1.4.2 and latest Drobo Dashboard, 2.5.4 as of writing this in August 2014. I have two Drobo Gen 2 boxes - the ones with 4 drive slots, USB2 and FW800. This isn'r really a question as I solved the problem, but I thought I'd document the issue and my solution for the benefit of others.
